Apt Image File Name for SEO

SEO Success: Use and improve information contained within your Images

Before you upload your image, pick a descriptive filename — preferably a filename you want your image to rank and be searched for. This will help with your website's SEO and improve search engine rankings.

For example, if you want to sell the Nikkon 3200 DSLR camera on your e-commerce store, then the file name of the images that you develop for showcasing your product can be something like 'nikkon-3200-DSLR-camera-front.jpg' and 'nikkon-3200-DSLR-camera-top.jpg' rather than 'pic0001.jpg' and 'pic0002.jpg'. By naming your image files corresponding and describing the actual product or service offerings, you can easily improve the SEO quotient of your site and get much more visitors.

Suitable ALT Tag for your images

Google Recommends and Uses ALT Tags - Still wondering why your SEO is Abysmal...?

When a human sees a picture of a camera, he can instantly recognize that it's a picture of a professional DSLR camera used for clicking photographs. This instant recognition though possible with some limitations, is not being directly and widely used by search engine spiders at this time.

For example, the Search Engine Spiders can 'understand and detect' that it is a camera and it is from the Nikon stable of cameras by looking at the image and corresponding logo. Still, this can be reinforced and we can help the spiders understand the image with suitable ALT tag for exact recognition.

Descriptive ALT Tag text provides users with visual impairments or text-based browsers to read and hear what your image is about and thus reach a higher audience. Search Engine Algorithms will thus, be able to rank your site and image higher in their results for search queries related to the image attributes.

Title and Captions for your Images

ALT + TITLE Tags can actually Energise your website SEO

Search Engine Spiders try to glean additional information about the website page and image from the text immediately surrounding the image. The TITLE Tag in image attribute can help provide additional confirmation to the Search Engine about your page's description.

Also, the image captions are important because they are one of the most well-read pieces of content on your entire site. A visually rich page with multiple images can easily convey all the important information without the need for the user to actually read anything.

How Does Google Read an Image?

Google and other Search Engines have actually started their Learning Process from Images

Artifical Intelligence and Computer Vision to 'READ' Images

Search Engines are now much more evolved than yester-years. A Search Engine like Google can apart from reading the image filename, image ALT and TITLE Tags and the general text content around the image, can also read behind the lines and INSIDE the image - "Literally."

When the Google Search Bot comes across an image, it stores a lot of information related to the images. It gets the basic idea about the image from the Image Filename, ALT+TITLE "Tags" and surrounding text content.

Thereafter, it moves on to see similar images in it's search database and their generic content. As in the image above, when it 'sees' the image of a cup of tea with tea leaves, it can put it in proper context and will help the SEO of a page targeting 'Tea' Services or products.

Google reading Image Embedded Text and other Image Objects

The Google's Image SEO Algorithm is going to be even more advanced than the normal Web Search Algorithm. Google can use Computer Vision / Artifical Intelligence to read Embedded Text.

In the example image above, we have the image of a Nikon camera with the text 'NIKON D3200' printed on the right bottom corner. The Nikon Logo in on the top left corner of the image. The actual camera body in present in between. Why does Google consider this image so rich of information?

When Google Indexes this image, it can potentially store the embedded text 'NIKON D3200' with the image as a potential keyword for the image recognition. Then it locks onto the camera object in the middle and stores the product 'camera' within its index. Lastly it can also identify the 'Nikon logo' on the image and thus stores this information. So, at the end of image indexing, apart from the usual image characteristics - filename, ALT+TITLE etc., it now has 'organic' or 'actual' un-manipulated information about the image.

Picture Speak Louder than Words with Metadata

Images also have IPTC/EXIF metadata that Search Engines are Indexing

Metadata Inside Images: IPTC/EXIF Metadata can supplement your Website SEO

Many people are unaware that Image formats like JPG have the additional ability to store metadata in the image file itself. These IPTC/EXIF metadata information in your images can and are being used by Google in it's ranking algorithms.

“Does Google use EXIF data from pictures as a ranking factor?”

Google's Matt Cutts responds to the above question -

"...we reserve the right to use EXIF or other sort of metadata that we find about an image in order to help people find information,.....we do reserve the right to use it as potentially a ranking factor.”

Very few SEO companies are targeting this detailed yet simplistic approach to Search Engine Rankings for their clients. We @Auxano, are using specialized software's to add EXIF and IPTC data to your images. Apart from augmenting the website SEO efforts, the EXIF and IPTC metadata can add an additional layer of security to your original images. This prevents simple 'copy and paste' usage of your images as the IPTC/EXIF information gets copied as well.

Images and other visually-enriched contents rank better not only because they can leverage more keywords, but because they provide a better UX and what users were specifically looking for. Images are critical to increasing the results of your SEO efforts: they can increase your website's appeal to new visitors, make your quality content easily digestible, convert your website user's intentions to click your link, boost the social distribution of your content.

As with all other SEO strategies that we advertise and promote, we recommend using images to increase your page's readability and retention quotient amongst your website users. If your page clicks with the users, the Search Engines Spiders and Algorithms will eventually come up to capture all these important UX factors. There’s only one ultimate tip (which would now sound redundant but here it is): make images an important element of your SEO strategy.

Image SEO Best Practices

Image SEO can only bear fruits if the Images are properly Indexed by Search Engines.

How to make sure that all your Images are Indexed by Search Engines

Well you have prepared awesome visually rich graphics and images. But, how do you make sure that these images are actually seen by the search engines in their entirety. Google and other search Engines outline some basic rules for making sure that your images are properly indexed and can help in your site SEO efforts.

Allowing and assisting Search Engine Bots to search your website for Images

Search Engine Spiders or Bots are routinely visiting your site to look for new and updated fresh content. Sometimes, while placing images you can put them in folders which are inaccessible by Search Engine Bots. A clear robots.txt file should ensure that all the images in your site are allowed to be indexed by search engine bots. SEO efforts are sometimes hampered by content being non-indexable by Search Engines.

Images in one of the Google Recommended Image Formats

There are numerous free and proprietary image formats out there. But Google recommends the following image file formats to display all graphical image contents on your website page.

  • ;- BMP Images

  • ;- GIF Images

  • ;- JPEG/JPG Images

  • ;- PNG Images

  • ;- SVG Images

  • ;- WebP Images

As per Google, only the above formats can get indexed into it's search index and thus augment your site SEO. Other formats images should ideally be converted into one of the recommended image formats.

Image Sitemap

All Search Engine Bots Love to Crawl a Website with the correctly formatted Sitemaps

See what Google Says about Image Sitemap to augment your Website Rankins

Structured Image Sitemap for Search Indexing and SEO

Search engines like structured information because they can easily parse through them. For any good SEO optimized website, this information should be provided through a "sitemap.xml" - a single file listing all the web pages of your site to tell Google and other search engines about the organization of your site's textual content.

Similarly to take your website’s image SEO process to the next level, you should take care of how you manage all your photos: upload them in a clear, descriptive and optimized paths. To increase the likelihood that your images can be found in Google Search results, it is recommended to have a "sitemap-image.xml - this file lists all the images on each webpage along with supporting metadata information about the image. Image sitemap information helps Google discover images that the GoogleBot might not otherwise be able to find (such as images your site reaches with JavaScript code), and allows you to indicate images on your site that you want Google to crawl, index and rank well in Search Engines.

Captions field in the Image Sitemap

Additional Image Metadata information like Caption, Geo-Locations, Title and License can additionally be provided in this Image Sitemap file. Again, though all this information is optional, still Google will index all the information and might be using this information to derive your website's search ranking.
